Entry 3: Identifying Bias

Item 1:

This independence of Britain’s educational institutions is most noticeable in universities.  They make their own choice of who to accept on their courses. There is no right of entry to university for anybody. Universities normally select students on the basis of A – level results and an interview. Those with better exam grades are more likely to be accepted.

Source: British education in the book of an introduction to British Studies for second year students

The bias: discrimination

The analysis: the short text shows readers about kind of students the British universities will choose or allow on their courses. Normally, they select A – level students and may consider students with their better exam grades. It means, they ignore or don’t select students who are not good at exam grades and having no the basic of A – level. Therefore, the standard of choosing students the British universities apply, reflects the discrimination on student’s study level.

Item 2:

Source: http://www.michellehenry.fr

The bias: stereotype

The analysis:  the picture shows a lot of popular images in the United Kingdom such as:  royal families, guardsman in red uniform, weather, welsh…. All these images remind viewers of symbols of a traditional British society. That means viewers are able to connect to Britain through this picture.

Item 3:

Trang http://tintuctrongngay.net.vn

Hà Nội: Cố qua đường ray, cụ già bị tàu cán

Dân Việt – Sự việc xảy ra vào khoảng 11h trưa nay, 11.11, tại đoạn đường ray đối diện số nhà 354 Lê Duẩn, Hà Nội. Nạn nhân tử vong tại chỗ.

Tàu hỏa cán chết cụ già

TPO – Khoảng 11h hôm nay (11-11), tàu SE20 (tuyến Đà Nẵng – Hà Nội) đâm chết một cụ già tại đường ray trên địa bàn phố Lê Duẩn (đoạn trước số nhà 354 Lê Duẩn, quận Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội).

The bias: assumption

The bias is caused by emotive language

The first title shows the reason for an old man’s accident – the old man was hit by train because of crossing the railway. Moreover, the title extremely evokes the reader’s curiosity what is consequence of accident to the old man. More important, the readers think of this title that the old man himself was blamed for his accident. However, the second title refers to the factor – train and the consequence of accident to the old man – the old man’s death. Therefore, the readers strongly understand that the train was blamed for the old man’s death. In other word, the title emphasize on the train’s mistake on the dead man.

– Identify bias: Use “emotive language”

– Analysis:

In the news, the author uses the “emotive language” to express his indignation towards this repugnant murder. In a normal way, it can be written that a Vietnamese wife was killed by her Korean husband and he stabbed her with 10 daggers. However, the author wrote: That the bride  Hoàng Thị Nam was killed by her husband on 4th May made Korean citizens be in indignation once again. Moreover, he used many “emotive words” such as savage murder, tragedy, a man with an animal’s heart. All these words make the news become more and more impressing and emotive.

ENTRY 3 – NGUYEN THI MINH THU

Identifying bias

I. ITEM 1:
Source: http://www.fotosearch.com

Type: Stereotypes
Analysis
The set of pictures above is about stereotypes of men and women. In these pictures, it is always the woman doing housework such as: washing dishes, ironing, cleaning, and cooking, with no help from the man. In society, although people has paid more attention to gender equality, it is still commonly thought that women are responsible for doing domestic chores; whereas, men’s responsibility is working to support his family and rest when he come back home from work. They do not have to do any housework.

II. ITEM 2:
Source: http://www.teenvillage.org/social_discrimination.asp

Type: Racial Discrimination
Analysis: In the picture, the black man looks so sad. He is constantly treated in a less favorable way such as “get called names” and “made fun of” just because he is black. This is the racial discrimination – unfair treatment of people based on their skin color.

III. ITEM 3:

Source:http://www.equalityhumanrights.com/your-rights/rights-in-different-settings/transport/using-public-transport/examples-of-discrimination/

Service on less favorable terms

A deaf and blind woman has booked a minicab. When the minicab arrives, the driver asks the passenger to pay the fare in advance, something which he would not require from other passengers. The driver believes, without good reason, that because of her disability she is less likely to be able to pay.

Type: Discrimination towards the disabled

Analysis: The cab driver in the story does not rely on two women’s ability of paying the cab fare because they are disabled. Because of his prejudice, he did an unfair action that is asking the fare in advance. This is a discrimination base on the prejudice with disabled people.

– Type of bias: Discrimination
– Analysis: The captain asked the two white men easy questions that everyone could answer. After that, he required the black man to answer an extremely difficult question . It goes without saying that the black one and even readers could not answer exactly. As a result, he would have to sacrifice his own life to save other men. Personally, the captain only pretended to give a test. He intentionally wanted the black man to die. In a nutshell, the captain showed his discrimination to the black people.

ITEM 1: http://www.toonpool.com/cartoons/The%20intolerable%20intolerance_37281

– Prejudice

– Analysis: The cartoon expresses the negative attitude of native American toward the immigrants. When native American lost their job without knowing the real reason, they blame the immigrants for that. Although the immigrants do nothing wrong, they think  it is all the immigrant’s fault.

ITEM 2: http://brotherpeacemaker.wordpress.com/2007/08/

– Discrimination

– Analysis: The cartoon depicts a late night in a traditionally urban neighborhood in the black community where a man has just shot another man in the back. Actually, the cartoons expresses the negative attitude toward the black. The black means aggressiveness, violence  and crime.

ITEM 3: http://www.britannica.com/blogs/2007/12/the-double-bind-dilemma-for-women-leaders/

– Stereotype

– Analysis: Woman are often evaluated against a “masculine” standard of leadership, women are left with limited and unfavorable options, no matter how they behave and perform as leaders. When women act in ways that are consistent with gender stereotypes, they are viewed as less competent leaders. When women act in ways that are inconsistent with such stereotypes, they are considered unfeminine. Therefore, woman are not suitable to become a good leadership.

Type:         Assumption

Analysis: The conclusion of research group that online game addiction is not as serious as information offered by the mass media is an inaccurate assumption because:

–         Tthe survey was sponsored by a game online enterprise and the participants were mostly game online players. Therefore, it’s result is subjective and not fair enough.

–         It was carried out on only six large cities, not on a large scale, so it cannot show the different effects of online game on people in these cities and the others.

–         Almost participants are mainly from 30 and younger, it doesn’t reflect an overal view of players.
