Item 1:

  • Stereotype

  • Analysis: Sometimes, things we do are not like what most other people are thinking of. Because of some general perceptions, they stereotype us as the ways they suppose to be. For example, people from Asian nations are often stereotyped as people who love science subjects especially Maths or people who dye their hair are regarded as the ones who are looking for attention… In short, people are often being stereotyped everywhere regardless of their race, their complexion or their nationality.

Item 2:

A black person answers a newspaper ad for an apartment. The landlord tells him that apartment has already been rented. It turns out that the apartment was not rented, and the landlord later rents it to a white applicant who answers the same ad.

  • Discrimination

  • Analysis: It is clear that the landlord treats the black and the white differently. He just wants the white to hire his house. Therefore, we can see race discrimination here, which should not has in human society. In some ways, people are all the same so they must be treated equally.

Item 3:

  • Prejudice

  • Analysis: Some people who lack knowlegde of homosexuality often have bad attitudes toward gay people. They consider homosexuality as a disease and it needs to get rid of our society. However, in fact, it is totally not true. Instead of prejudicing gay or lesbian, we should help them to make their life better.

Stereotype

– This picture shows the difference between the east and the west in their queuing culture. On the left side is the west who always stand in line to wait for their turn whereas the east always want to be the first and stand disorderly.

Item #3:

– Prejudice

– The woman in this story is treated unequally by her family because of a backward opinion that women have to follow men and have the responsibility of caring for their husbands and their children. They are even not allowed to study higher or have higher status than their husbands.

Identifying Bias

ITEM 1:

Source: http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread502011/pg1

–       Discrimination  (racism discrimination)

–       Analysis : It is clear that colored people suffer from the discrimination in public places like where they are allowed to drink water. And in this picture, their water tank is very small and dirty. Because white people believe that colored people do not have the same class with them and they just receive poor services.

ITEM 2:

Source : http://mappingpolitics.blogspot.com/2009/07/for-f.html

–       Prejudice (gender prejudice)

–       Analysis : Men, mostly, were working and earning the income, while women inside were the ones busy working for the daily housework such as cooking, washing and taking care children. In this advertisement, the woman stands behind the man and the script  “the Chef does everything but cook- that’s what wives are for!” shows the men’s opinion about their wives duty.

ITEM 3:

–       Bias caused by emotive language

–       Analysis : the word they use to call a police “a cop” like the way of criminals. This title can cause a misunderstanding about the police and also cause many controversial comments from the readers.

Entry 3: Identifying Bias

Item 1:

This independence of Britain’s educational institutions is most noticeable in universities.  They make their own choice of who to accept on their courses. There is no right of entry to university for anybody. Universities normally select students on the basis of A – level results and an interview. Those with better exam grades are more likely to be accepted.

Source: British education in the book of an introduction to British Studies for second year students

The bias: discrimination

The analysis: the short text shows readers about kind of students the British universities will choose or allow on their courses. Normally, they select A – level students and may consider students with their better exam grades. It means, they ignore or don’t select students who are not good at exam grades and having no the basic of A – level. Therefore, the standard of choosing students the British universities apply, reflects the discrimination on student’s study level.

Item 2:

Source: http://www.michellehenry.fr

The bias: stereotype

The analysis:  the picture shows a lot of popular images in the United Kingdom such as:  royal families, guardsman in red uniform, weather, welsh…. All these images remind viewers of symbols of a traditional British society. That means viewers are able to connect to Britain through this picture.

Item 3:

Hà Nội: Cố qua đường ray, cụ già bị tàu cán

Dân Việt – Sự việc xảy ra vào khoảng 11h trưa nay, 11.11, tại đoạn đường ray đối diện số nhà 354 Lê Duẩn, Hà Nội. Nạn nhân tử vong tại chỗ.

Trang http://www.tienphong.vn

Tàu hỏa cán chết cụ già

TPO – Khoảng 11h hôm nay (11-11), tàu SE20 (tuyến Đà Nẵng – Hà Nội) đâm chết một cụ già tại đường ray trên địa bàn phố Lê Duẩn (đoạn trước số nhà 354 Lê Duẩn, quận Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội).

The bias: assumption

The bias is caused by emotive language

The first title shows the reason for an old man’s accident – the old man was hit by train because of crossing the railway. Moreover, the title extremely evokes the reader’s curiosity what is consequence of accident to the old man. More important, the readers think of this title that the old man himself was blamed for his accident. However, the second title refers to the factor – train and the consequence of accident to the old man – the old man’s death. Therefore, the readers strongly understand that the train was blamed for the old man’s death. In other word, the title emphasize on the train’s mistake on the dead man.

–         Scapegoating

–         Analysis: In the picture, we can see that maybe a secretary is reporting  about the earthquake to the presedent. The report said that earthquake was caused by unamed fault. After listening to the report, the presedent immediately decided to call the unamed fault “BUSH’S FAULT”. The president blamed for the fault on Bush president who was a former president.

http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/d/discrimination.asp

–         Discrimination

–         Analysis: In the picture, there are six people playing chess. Three black persons are in the same team and three white persons are in the same team. It is easy to see the racial discramination because black persons only have pawns which is the lowest position in the chessboard in their hands while white persons hold all power chesspieces such as king, queen and net force.

Type: Assumption

Analysis: People are often affected in assessing the nature of the truth by the influence of media. Although in regimes of both President Bush and President Obama the US have to join unrighteous wars everywhere, people believe that wars in President Bush’s regime only bring out bad results and no hope for them. On the other hand, through articles, people have a good impression to President Obama so they support to his policy of wars and trust in a bright future which wars will draw out.

Type:  Prejudice

Analysis: In the picture, viewers can see clearly that through periods, men become more and more perfect while women only attach to their housework or chores.
