Item 1: Stereotypical American

Bias: stereotype

Analysis: The picture above is of the stereotypical American. We are portrayed as fat, patriotic, and into greasy foods. The image shows a cowboy hat, which puts the term Westerner into an object. There is a hands-free cell phone in the man’s ear, which probably represents how often we are on the phone. The flag shirt shows how we are made out to be proud of our free country and what the flag stands for. The burger and drink represents how often we eat unhealthy foods. This image is stereotypical because there are some Americans who eat healthy, are not patriotic and are definitely not fat.

Item 2: New York City Bus Makes Women Ride In Back

If you’re a female and you happen to hop on the B110 bus in Brooklyn, you’ll be likely to feel as if you just stepped into a middle east controlled region of the world, that’s because that particular city bus requires that women ride in the back and men ride upfront.

While the B110 bus is open to the public under an agreement with the city the actual vehicle is operated by a private company that services two Hasidic neighborhoods. Under Hasidic rules physical contact in public between the sexes is not allowed and therefore they are separated whenever possible.

Bias: Gender discrimination: Bus is a public mean of transportation so it is equal to everybody. However, in this case, they express a profound discrimination between men and women and they let women have a seat in the back and give permission of the front seat for men.

Analysis:   Discrimination about the physical contact: In the past, especially in the eastern countries, people are not allowed to have physical contact in public place no matter how close is their relationship. But this concept has been changing dramatically in the modern time especially in western countries yet in this bus route, people still hold a old-fashioned way of thinking about the contact of the men and women. As a result, they find ways to separate men and women as much as possible.

Item 3: Scapegoating

Bias: Scapegoating

Analysis: While two men in suits-two businessmen are having meal, they are deliberating each other that they are getting credit. They feel happy and satisfied because whether they are successful or not, both of them are still safe. They are planning to blame sins for other persons who are innocent. In the modern society, corruption’s social evils being condemed.

entry 3: NGUYEN XUAN HOA

Item 1:

  • Stereotype

  • Analysis: Sometimes, things we do are not like what most other people are thinking of. Because of some general perceptions, they stereotype us as the ways they suppose to be. For example, people from Asian nations are often stereotyped as people who love science subjects especially Maths or people who dye their hair are regarded as the ones who are looking for attention… In short, people are often being stereotyped everywhere regardless of their race, their complexion or their nationality.

Item 2:

A black person answers a newspaper ad for an apartment. The landlord tells him that apartment has already been rented. It turns out that the apartment was not rented, and the landlord later rents it to a white applicant who answers the same ad.

Source: http://www.state.sc.us/schac/case_examples_of_discrimination.htm

  • Discrimination

  • Analysis: It is clear that the landlord treats the black and the white differently. He just wants the white to hire his house. Therefore, we can see race discrimination here, which should not has in human society. In some ways, people are all the same so they must be treated equally.

Item 3:

  • Prejudice

  • Analysis: Some people who lack knowlegde of homosexuality often have bad attitudes toward gay people. They consider homosexuality as a disease and it needs to get rid of our society. However, in fact, it is totally not true. Instead of prejudicing gay or lesbian, we should help them to make their life better.

Stereotype

– This picture shows the difference between the east and the west in their queuing culture. On the left side is the west who always stand in line to wait for their turn whereas the east always want to be the first and stand disorderly.

Item #2:

– Discrimination

– The man in this picture is finding a roomate who is funny, generous and especially not a Thanh Hoa person.

Item #3:

– Prejudice

– The woman in this story is treated unequally by her family because of a backward opinion that women have to follow men and have the responsibility of caring for their husbands and their children. They are even not allowed to study higher or have higher status than their husbands.

ENTRY 3

Identifying Bias

ITEM 1:

Source: http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread502011/pg1

–       Discrimination  (racism discrimination)

–       Analysis : It is clear that colored people suffer from the discrimination in public places like where they are allowed to drink water. And in this picture, their water tank is very small and dirty. Because white people believe that colored people do not have the same class with them and they just receive poor services.

ITEM 2:

Source : http://mappingpolitics.blogspot.com/2009/07/for-f.html

–       Prejudice (gender prejudice)

–       Analysis : Men, mostly, were working and earning the income, while women inside were the ones busy working for the daily housework such as cooking, washing and taking care children. In this advertisement, the woman stands behind the man and the script  “the Chef does everything but cook- that’s what wives are for!” shows the men’s opinion about their wives duty.

ITEM 3:

Source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/greenslade/2008/nov/24/week

–       Bias caused by emotive language

–       Analysis : the word they use to call a police “a cop” like the way of criminals. This title can cause a misunderstanding about the police and also cause many controversial comments from the readers.

Entry 3 – Nguyen Thi Hoang Ha

Item 1: Quotation:

Heaven is where the Police are British, the Chefs are French, the Mechanics are German, the Lovers Italian and it’s all organised by the Swiss.
Hell is where the Chefs are British, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, the Police are German and it’s all organised by the Italians.

From http://www.amusingquotes.com/h/h/Heaven_1.htm

–          Stereotype:

–          Analysis:

This quotation shows fixed beliefs of people from different countries. British people are famous for having great policemen, but they are not very good at cooking. French foods are well-known all over the world, therefore French people are known for their creativity. Germany is the country of mechanism. Italian people are so romantic; therefore, they would be great lovers. Switzerland is the country of watches and they are famous for being well-organized.

Item 2:

From http://www.sajaforum.org/2007/05/cartoon_an_unsu.html

–          Discrimination

–          Analysis: The man receives a call, maybe asking for information about a car that is for sale. However, the man thinks that “he sounds black”, and he doesn’t want to sell the car to the man. That is racial discrimination, because from the voice and intonation he hears (which are perhaps not very polite – according to his gestures and attitude), he thinks that it is from black people. Therefore, he declines to sell the car to the man.

Item 3: An article by a reader of an online newspaper.

From http://vnexpress.net/gl/ban-doc-viet/2011/08/osin-lua-dao-tinh-vi/

–          Prejudice

–          Analysis:

This work is called “osin” with a not-very-friendly attitude. The title of the article just states that “Osin” commits crime. The usage of the noun “Osin” is similar to generic reference, which create a feeling that those people in general are not good and shouldn’t received much expectation from others.

ENTRY 3: Identifying bias

ITEM 1:

– Scapegoating

– Analysis: This is a meeting between leaders and they “believe” that there are no bad leaders, only bad followers. The verb “believe” means to think a fact is true; therefore, we can see that the leaders just think on their own and blame for their followers because we can judge a leader or a follower bad or not.

Source: http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/s/scapegoat.asp

ITEM 2:

– Prejudice

– Analysis: “Corporate ladder” is the series of steps people go through as they gain more power in a corporation and rise to the top. We can see in the picture two ladders: a very high ladder for men and a much shorter one for women. Women are often discriminated in being promoted and disrespected by men because men think that women cannot do big things and gain high position in corporation.

ITEM 3:

– Stereotype

– Analysis: This is the image of the perfect Britain which is fixed belief. For example, when people are reminded of the English, they immediately think English are great cook but not all the English cook well. These characteristics may represent Britain but not all British have the same things.

Type:         Assumption

Analysis: The conclusion of research group that online game addiction is not as serious as information offered by the mass media is an inaccurate assumption because:

–         Tthe survey was sponsored by a game online enterprise and the participants were mostly game online players. Therefore, it’s result is subjective and not fair enough.

–         It was carried out on only six large cities, not on a large scale, so it cannot show the different effects of online game on people in these cities and the others.

–         Almost participants are mainly from 30 and younger, it doesn’t reflect an overal view of players.
